Google AI Overviews cite pages from the same index that powers ordinary search, and the pages they cite are mostly pages that already rank well for the query or a close variant of it. There is no separate submission, no file to add, and no AI-specific ranking system to appeal to. So the honest answer has two halves. First, get the page indexed and ranking on the first page for the question. Second, structure the page so Google's model can lift the answer without rewriting it. Skip the first half and nothing in the second half will help. This article covers how to check whether a page is eligible, the four edits that earn the citation, what the AI report on my own site shows about which pages get picked, how to measure it, and the three things people spend time on that do nothing.

How an AI Overview picks its sources

When Google decides to show an AI Overview, it runs the query, and often several related queries, against the normal index, reads the top results, and generates a summary with links to the pages it drew from. The model does not browse the whole web for the best answer. It reads what already ranks. That is why the citation list under an overview usually overlaps with the ten blue links below it, and why a page that ranks on page four is not going to be cited no matter how well it is written.

It also means the work is the same work. A page that ranks in the top ten for a question and answers it in the first two sentences under a clear heading is the page the overview lifts. A page that ranks in the top ten and buries the answer under a story gets summarised from someone else's specifics. The difference between those two pages is an editing job, and it is the job this article is about.

Confirm you are eligible before you optimize

Open Google Search Console, go to Performance, and add a query filter for the question you care about. Switch to the Pages tab. If the page has impressions for that query, it is ranking somewhere, and the average position tells you where. If the page has no impressions, it is not ranking, and AI Overviews are not going to cite a page Google does not show. Fix that first: it is usually an indexing problem on a vibe coded site, and it is usually one of the nine reasons in that article.

A position under 10 makes the page a candidate today. A position between 11 and 20 makes it a candidate after a rewrite, because the rewrite for citation and the rewrite for ranking are the same. Past 20, the problem is the site and not the page, which is covered in Why is my website indexed but not showing on Google?.

Search Console reports AI Overview and AI Mode appearances inside the same Performance data rather than as a separate traffic source. There is a search appearance filter for it in some properties. Treat it as a subset of your normal search performance, because that is what it is: the same impressions, counted when the page appeared as a cited source inside an AI feature.

The four edits that earn the citation

  1. Put the answer in the first two sentences under the heading. Google's model reads the heading as the question and the paragraph beneath as the answer. If your answer starts three paragraphs down, after a story, it is not liftable. Write the direct answer first, then explain. This is the single edit that matters most, and it is the one AI builders never make, because they open every section with a warm-up.
  2. Make headings match how people ask. The H2 should be the question, or the noun phrase people type. Compare your headings against the queries in Search Console and rewrite the ones that are clever instead of clear. A heading that says Our Approach is not a question anyone asked. A heading that says How long does the process take is.
  3. Add specifics the model can quote. A number, a timeframe, a named exception, a step count, a price range you actually publish. Overviews cite pages that contain the concrete detail the summary needs. Generic pages get summarised from someone else's specifics, and the citation goes to that someone else.
  4. Be one clear entity. Your name, what you do, and where, stated the same way on every page and in one schema block served in the HTML. The model has to decide whether to attribute a fact to you, and it attributes to sources it can identify. A site whose about page, footer, and schema disagree about the business name is a site the model hedges on.

Here is what edit one looks like in practice. Before: a section headed Timeline that opens with two sentences about how every project is different. After: a section headed How long does a website rebuild take, opening with the sentence Most rebuilds take four to six weeks from the first call to launch, followed by the three things that make it longer. The second version is the one that gets lifted, and it is also the one a person reads.

What my own site's AI report shows

I run a review site that is under six months old. In the 28 days to 13 August its Search Console showed 33,600 impressions in Google's AI features. Eight pages out of 76 produced just over three quarters of them. Four of those eight have literal question titles, of the form is this product safe or is this service worth it, and every one of them answers the title in its first two sentences, which is a house rule on that site. The single biggest page is a head-to-head comparison of two products. A review published on 3 August reached 1,359 AI-feature impressions in eleven days.

Three things to take from that. Citations concentrate on a few pages, so pick the pages to work on rather than editing everything. Question titles answered directly get picked. And domain age is not the wall people think it is; the eleven-day page landed into a cluster of related pages the site already ranked for, which is the caveat, and it is a caveat you can act on by building the cluster.

Where the other numbers come from

I cannot show you a Google AI Overviews citation counter, because Google does not publish one. What I can show is the Microsoft equivalent, which measures the same page structure. A content site restructured with the four edits above earned 184,800 citations across Copilot and Microsoft partners in a quarter, with 118 pages cited in an average week. Google's AI features read the same HTML, and the Search Console impressions on the same pages rose in step.

How to measure progress

  1. In Search Console Performance, save a comparison of the last 28 days against the previous 28 for the pages you edited. Impressions rising with position steady or improving is the first sign.
  2. Where the property offers the AI search appearance filter, apply it and watch the same pages. That number is the closest thing to an AI Overview citation count Google gives you.
  3. Search the question yourself, logged out, in a private window, once a week. Note whether an overview appears, and whether your page is in its source list. Keep the list in a spreadsheet with the date.
  4. Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools and read the AI Performance report there. It counts Copilot citations on the same pages, and it is the only official per-page citation report either company publishes.

Send me your URL. I will pull the queries where you already rank in the top ten and show you the pages that need only the first-paragraph rewrite to become citable.

Three things people waste time on

  • An llms.txt file. Google's Gary Illyes has said Google does not use it, and Google's May 2026 guidance lists it among things site owners can ignore. It is a text file that nothing fetches.
  • Keyword pages about AI. Pages titled AI SEO for your category rank for nothing, because nobody searches that way. On one of my own sites the AI-search vocabulary I had used for service names had zero impressions across the whole property; the plain-language names were the ones people typed. Check your own Queries tab before you build a page around a term.
  • Blocking the crawlers. Google-Extended controls whether your content trains Gemini. It does not control AI Overviews. If you block Googlebot from a page, the page leaves the index entirely, and the overview cites your competitor instead.

Questions people also ask

How do I get my business in Google AI Overviews?

Rank the page that answers the customer's question on page one, then make sure the answer is in the first two sentences under a heading that matches the question. For a local business, the Google Business Profile and consistent listings feed the entity side; the page feeds the answer side.

Do AI Overviews take traffic from my site?

For informational queries they can reduce clicks, because the answer is on the results page. Being the cited source recovers part of that, and for commercial queries the citation is the visit. The alternative, being absent from the overview, loses the click and the mention.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews without leaving search?

You can use the nosnippet or max-snippet rules to limit what Google shows from a page, and Google honours them for AI Overviews too. That removes you from the overview and from most snippets. There is no setting that keeps the ranking and removes only the overview.

Do backlinks matter for AI Overviews?

As much as they matter for ranking, because the overview cites pages that rank. A page with no authority does not rank, so it does not get cited. Real mentions from sites in your field remain the way a young domain earns a page one position.

Is there a way to see AI Overview citations per page?

Not as a separate report from Google. Search Console folds AI feature impressions into Performance, with an appearance filter in some properties. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report gives per-page citation counts for Copilot, which is the nearest thing to a per-page view.

The Bing and ChatGPT side of this job is in How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my business?, and the service that covers both is Vibe Code AI Search.
